She is in Sweden to study and sent me this picture of two fine young Yari—a 1st and 2nd gen! I wish we got the 1st gen instead of the Echo

Is that basically an Echo hatch with a different face?

Yeah, Echo vs. Yaris is basically a game of bodystyle and branding. Unfortunately the U.S. got the short end of the stick with regards to both factors.

I nearly bought a first gen with the 1.3 petrol engine. Nice little car but I wanted 5 doors and a little more room.

Too bad we never got the Echo hatchback, but at least Canada did. They even have a sporty RS model.
People hate on the Echo and Yaris for no reason.

There was a five door, admittedly with no more room.

I've been in a Mk 1. Cheap interior with lots of hard plastics but dead reliable.

They seem fairly rare around here though. Especially on the 1.3 vvti which is what I wanted.

I understand three door cars are something of a British specialty. For most of us five door Yarises etc are the norm.

Yeah I see a lot of 3 doors, especially among superminis. I don't really understand it, my car would be so much more awkward as a 3 door.

I lust for all the hot versions we never got. At least the current SE model has some actual performance enhancements (no power tho).
